38th Annual ASU Jazz Festival featuring Chick Corea: Solo Piano

The Vicksburg Convention Center is proud to host the 38th Annual Alcorn State University (ASU) Jazz Festival featuring the legendary Chick Corea. The festival will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018. The times for the performances are scheduled for 9:00 am-4:00 pm, High School and University Jazz Ensembles; 4:00 pm-5:00 pm, Chick Corea Workshop; 7:00 pm-7:45 pm, Mississippi Jazz Educators; 8:00 pm-9:30 pm, Chick Corea. All events are free and open to the public.

For nearly four decades the Department of Fine Arts at Alcorn State University, with funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Southern Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts, has sponsored what has become Mississippi’s longest-running and most prestigious jazz festival. The day-long festival features performances by some of the most outstanding professional jazz musicians and university, college and secondary school jazz ensembles from throughout the United States. Highlights of the festival are the afternoon workshops and evening concerts by some of the world’s greatest jazz artists which have included Jazz masters like Clark Terry, Max Roach, Slide Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Louie Bellson, Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis, Stanley Turrentine, McCoy Tyner, Arturo Sandoval and Ramsey Lewis. These artists have helped establish the ASU Jazz Festival as a true gem and premier jazz event in the region.

When the legendary artist Chick Corea recorded Piano Improvisations on the ECM label in 1971, he was the first jazz pianist of his era to release such a recording. This groundbreaking album literally opened the floodgates to a new genre of solo piano that continues strong today. In 2018, Chick embarks on his latest solo adventure, embracing the work of his piano heroes (Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and many others), gorgeous classical excursions and of course his deep catalog of classic Corea compositions.

5th Annual Ritz on the River Retro Prom

On Thursday, July 19, 2018, the Vicksburg Convention Center (VCC) will go retro with the Molly Ringwalds band at the 5th Annual Ritz on the River.  The Molly Ringwalds time machine promises a night packed with mind-blowing 80’s anthems.  The Mollys bring back the iconic hits that defined a decade. Tickets go on sale Monday, April 9, 2018.  Dinner show tickets are $50 (advance purchase only) and general admission show tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of show.  Dinner will be served at 6:30pm and show begins at 8:00pm.  Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000 or the Vicksburg Convention Center Box Office.  Tables can be reserved for dinner show only with group purchases of 10 and special sponsorship opportunities are available.  A portion of the proceeds from this year’s event will be donated to Jacob’s Ladder.  Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center provides adolescents and young adults who have intellectual disabilities with a quality education that prepares them for adulthood.

The Molly Ringwalds are the world’s greatest 80’s experience. Hailing from Sheffield, England, this legendary quintet has been able to combine their individual and very formidable talents to create the true essence of the most radical decade to ever be called “The 80’s.” The Molly Ringwalds create an 80’s Experience by honing their abilities to apply make-up and tease their hair while showcasing all the musical genres of the decade. From their days of building a following at a pub located in a large portion of a big city near a small village located south of a place you’ve never heard of, to selling out large venues in the United States, The Molly Ringwalds are an indescribable act. Luck and circumstance brought these young lads together. The rest is the history of the 80’s.

We take pride in going beyond expectations to provide top quality entertainment and events for the community.  For more information or for sponsorship opportunities (click here for sponsorship form), please contact Elyce Curry or Annette Kirklin at 601.630.2929.
